Aches and Pains

About nine months after we started eating keto/low carb I started to ache. And I mean a deep down to the bone muscle ache. At first I was trying to figure out what I had done to become so sore. Did I do a lot of lifting? LOL I haven't worked out or done yoga since the pandemic hit. So I know the aches and pains weren't due to any form of activity.
I did some research in other keto sites to see if perhaps my aches and pains might be due to my diet.
Low and behold!
Evidently eating a low carb diet and especially a clean keto diet you have cut out most of the magnesium rich foods you used to eat. Whole grains, legumes are some of the top magnesium rich foods that are no-nos.
Guess what magnesium does for your body?
Magnesium is a nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy. Magnesium is important for many processes in the body, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA
People following the ketogenic diet should ensure that they are getting enough electrolytes from the food they eat to avoid muscle pains and other symptoms of an imbalance. Electrolytes include calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. A person can get these from eating a balanced diet.

So I did add in a magnesium supplement to my daily regimen but I would prefer to get my vitamins and minerals from my food. I started to research which foods are rich in magnesium that I could eat and stay on our keto journey.
1) Dark Chocolate (obviously without sugar, but there are some keto friendly dark chocolates available)
2) Avocados (YEAH! love Avocados)
3) Nuts As I've mentioned our favorite snack mix is roasted almonds, peanuts, cashews, pistachios (listed in order of how good they are for you, carbs low to higher.)
4) Fatty Fish such as salmon
5) Leafy Greens
6) Blueberries (can have in moderation)
Between the supplement and ensuring I eat some of the above each day the aches have improved! However, I can tell right away if I miss my supplement or don't get enough of something high in magnesium.
So if you start to get achy make sure you're eating plenty of the good options above.
